Vocational Students Show Off Their Talents

Reported by Liz Guerra, Communications Officer

At our home in Guatemala, our middle school children—grades 6-9—have the opportunity to take vocational classes. Our workshops offer classes in metal, wood, sewing, baking, cooking, and handcrafts. Recently, our family opened our doors to the public and we displayed the talents of our vocational students.

Four of our workshops began preparing for this exposition in January when school started. The kids in the metal, wood, handicrafts, and sewing workshops all worked very hard making the following:

Metal Shop: everything from candleholders to hooks for keys and
                    jackets
Wood Shop: everything from frames to decorative boxes Handicrafts Shop: everything from candles to aluminum artwork
Sewing Shop: everything from dresses to potholders

The kitchen and bakery workshops began preparing their food four days prior to the exposition. The kitchen had foods ranging from tamales to mole, while the bakery had all of their delicious breads, cookies, cakes, and even pizzas for sale to everyone visiting our workshops.

The exposition took place within our workshop areas. Our sewing workshop made all of the ribbon decorations that were hung from the ceiling and each workshop had its own area where everyone could see what we had on display and for sale. "It was a very beautiful and fun event for everyone that attended," said Professor Mariano, the Workshops Director.

We are planning to have another exposition in October and we are hoping that we can get more people to attend. Professor Mariano would also like to be able to sell workshop items in Antigua, but right now because of a lack of funds we are unable to do so. “Hopefully, by October we can show others outside of NPH all that we can do," he said. "However, right now there is still much to do before we think too far into the future.”

Our kids at Casa San Andres are very talented. And, this exposition was a great opportunity for all of our NPH family including staff to see the results of our hardworking, amazing and talented kids who are taking classes in our workshops.
