Friends of the Orphans in Haiti: Relief Effort Updates
Friends of the Orphans provides financial and volunteer support to Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos/Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs (NPH/NPFS, Spanish and French for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”), which has orphan homes and outreach programs in nine countries, including Haiti.
As a result of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12, 2010, NPH/NPFS Haiti suffered the tragic loss of staff, volunteers and family members, as well as extensive damage to its facilities.
I already made a donation. How is my gift being used? I am thinking of donating. How will my gift be used? Relief funds are being used for medical supplies, food, water, mattresses, tents and other items critical to effectively treat and care for thousands of victims. (Click here for sample costs.) Because of the close proximity of NPH’s home in the Dominican Republic, we have been able to make an immediate impact in Haiti and are continuing to help those in need. Supplies are being purchased by NPH Dominican Republic and transported directly to NPH/NPFS Haiti. Following are the primary areas of assistance. (Click here for detailed statistics.)
• St. Hélène Orphanage for Children, a permanent home for more than 350 children, is caring for an additional 75 children who had been supported while living off-site, but lost their homes in the earthquake. We are committed to helping as many children as possible and are identifying children with no families who can be integrated into St. Hélène’s.
• St. Damien Hospital, the only free pediatric hospital in Haiti, is currently caring for more than 200 children and adults. Roughly 20 surgeries are being performed each day in three operating rooms. A new neo-natal ward is caring for nearly 20 women and babies. Read more . . .
• Kay St. Germaine, adjacent to the hospital, is caring for 30 abandoned children from the Port-au-Prince general hospital until a permanent facility is found. School and physical therapy programs re-opened on February 1 with 18 students and 10 patients. (The whereabouts of many previous students and patients is still unknown.) We anticipate that eventually physical therapy will be offered to people who will be receiving prosthetic limbs. We are also searching for a rental property in Petionville to continue the day program for disabled children that was previously located in the Fr. Wasson Center, which collapsed in the earthquake. • Four Mobile Clinics are each attending to 70 - 140 patients daily.
 • A Day Camp for Vulnerable and Displaced Children is currently serving communities on a rotating schedule. Each day, 85-100 children are transported to NPH/NPFS grounds and provided with breakfast, lunch, and educational and recreational activities. They are returned to their families in the afternoon. An off-site camp is serving 85 children per day. The programs are being managed by youths who grew up at the NPH/NPFS Haiti home. Read more . . .
• The NPH/NPFS water truck is making daily deliveries of 36,000 gallons of water, enough for 4,285 families.
• The Francisville bakery is baking and distributing 5,000 rolls per day.
How much do supplies cost? Following are approximate current costs of items in the Dominican Republic. They do not include transportation expenses.
