The "Haiti Disaster Relief Fundraiser" was held on Wednesday, January 20, beginning at 9:30 p.m. at SPiN New York, a social ping pong club located in Gramercy. Led by actress Susan Sarandon, it featured a large number of celebrities and local fashion and design experts, and was open to the public.

Updates on American Volunteers in Haiti

It is with deep anguish that we confirm the deaths in Haiti of international volunteer Molly Hightower, 22, of Port Orchard, WA., and Ryan Kloos, 24, of Phoenix, AZ, who is the brother of Friends of the Orphans international volunteer Erin Kloos, 26, also of Phoenix. Erin was rescued from the Fr. Wasson Center and is in a Florida hospital.

Children from a variety of Bolivian schools were invited to participate in a mural competition in honor of the International Day of Non-Violence. Three boys from NPH, supported by their family, accepted the challenge.

One of more than 1,200 nominees, 22-year-old Darlene become the first recipient of the new Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) Award—Against All Odds at a glittering ceremony in Copenhagen, Denmark.

At the 13th Hollywood Award Gala Ceremony on October 26, 2009, Father Richard Frechette, received the Hollywood Humanitarian Award for his work in Haiti.

It was a beautiful clear day in a week of rain, which perfectly set the tone for the Hermanos Mayores (Spanish for "Big Brothers and Sisters") Gathering. An annual reunion of former pequeños, the event continues to grow.

On October 1, 2009, the Tempe Sister City organization honored Barbara and Don Liem for their work with Friends/NPH. Supporters for more than 30 years, the Liems have raised millions of dollars for the children of NPH.

Teaming with Crocs, Feed the Children and Pan American Development Foundation, the Detroit Pistons player delivered a generous donation to the children.

On September 5, 2009, John Shinsky's dream of opening a home for orphaned and abandoned children became a reality. The celebration was attended by 150 people, including Pro-Football-Hall-of-Famers, and a CBS Sports film crew.

Christopher VanDerhoef—the brother of a volunteer, a Godparent, and a dentist—was generous enough to combine his vacation with some work in his field, work that our children really needed.

Casa Santa Ana is the fourth NPH site to benefit from the work of Agronomists Eduardo Briones Alonso and Pilar Fernandez. Their dedication and hard work will provide additional food for the home as well as teach the children about nutrition and how to raise crops.

John Shinsky, a former Michigan State University football star, and his wife Cindy have founded a new orphanage in Matamoros, Mexico, called Ciudad De Los Niños (“City of the Children”). Partnering with Friends and NPH, the home will operate under the same unique model as the other nine NPH homes.

After days of tension, disputes, and protests, the President of Honduras was ousted and flown to Costa Rica. Throughout it all, everything has remained calm and peacful at NPH. UPDATED 7/6/2009

Graduation Celebrated at NPH Dominican

The school year ended with a day to remember for the kindergartners. Teachers, staff, the other children and family members were on hand to help them celebrate an important milestone – their first graduation.

As a result of a countrywide outbreak of Swine Flu, schools across Guatemala have been closed until the beginning of July. This includes NPH's school. UPDATED 7/15/2009

Earthquake Hits Honduras; NPH Is Safe

Early on Thursday, May 29, 2009 a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Honduras. The shaking was felt at the NPH home, but no one was injured and there was no damage.

Construction Begins at NPH Peru

After a great deal of hard work and planning, construction has begun at NPH Peru. In March, enthusiastic volunteers arrived to pour the foundation and begin building the home's structures with the help of the pequeños.

As many as 103 deaths are thought to have been caused by an outbreak of the swine flu in Mexico, according to the country's health minister. Fortunately, there are currently no cases reported at the NPH home. UPDATED 5/5/2009

We have freshened up our logo with a new color scheme and added a wonderful tag line to describe the work of Friends and the Orphans and Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH). Together, we are: “Raising Children. Transforming Lives.” This updated approach will help us in strengthening our visibility and extending our reach to many more caring people.

Originally a home for children with AIDS, Casa de los Angeles at NPH Honduras now cares for pequeños with extreme disabilities. Staff and friends were on hand to help the children celebrate the home's 20th anniversary on March 10, 2009.

NPH Haiti Turns 22

Celebrating NPH/NPFS Haiti's 22nd Anniversary.

At Sainte Hélène in Kenscoff, the children, former pequeños, staff and guests spent a fun-filled day telling stories, sharing with each other and just being happy to be together to celebrate the home's 22nd year.

On January 6, children, staff, volunteers and visitors celebrated the home's anniversary with games, performances, a special lunch and cake.

In the last few months of 2008, a special workshop was started to help students who have experienced challenges and frustration in other workshops due to learning disabilities and attention difficulties. The workshop focused on teaching handicrafts like jewelry and piñata making.

In early December 2008, Paul and Deborah Haggis, Madeline Stowe, Josh Brolin, Diane Lane, Maria Bello, Bryn Mooser, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Michael Stahl David, and former Senator John Edwards were in Haiti for the inauguration of the country's first Rehabilitation Center for disabled children - NPH's Kay Saint Germaine.

Graduations Celebrated at NPH Guatemala

The NPH Guatemala Class of 2008 celebrates.

Unlike most U.S. schools, the school year in Guatemala is January through October. However, in both places, graduation is an important occasion that recognizes and rewards the hard work and accomplishments of students. It is a day that signifies that children have taken a step closer towards their future as adults.
