Frequently Asked Financial Questions

Other FAQs: General | Sponsorship Program | Sponsor Donations

Does Friends accept gifts of stock?
Yes! Gifts of stocks, bonds or shares of mutual funds are tax-deductible and easy to complete. Click here for more information about giving appreciated securities.

Can I give other non-cash gifts?
Yes! You can leave a gift in your will, name Friends of the Orphans as a beneficiary of your life insurance, make a Payable Upon Death (POD) designation, or fund a charitable gift annuity that will let you enjoy tax benefits now while dedicating yourself to supporting our future work.  Click here for more information about Planned Giving.

Prizes and auction items such as gift certificates and merchandise, and provisions such as food and drink, are always needed for special events. In addition, medical and school supplies as well as clothing, shoes and house wares are collected for shipment to the NPH homes. The regional offices also accept in-kind gifts such as office supplies and equipment for administrative purposes.

Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes, to the extent allowed by law. Friends of the Orphans is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, Tax ID #65-1229309.

Can donations be made online?
Yes, donations can be made securely online by clicking here.

Can an individual designate a gift to a specific home?
Yes. Individual donors can designate within the scope of the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for "Our Little Brothers and Sisters") budget which is what Friends of the Orphans supports. Donations designated toward a specific home will go into the general budget support of that home.

Can an individual designate a gift to a specific project?
Yes. Individual donors can designate a donation toward a specific project if it is included in the NPH general budget or if the National board has passed a resolution to support a specific project. Education, food, and medical care are some of the largest projects at NPH where donations can be designated. Individual donors cannot designate donations outside of the general budget and receive a tax deduction. If a donor designates outside of what has been approved by the National board, the donation is not tax deductible according to the IRS regulations AND could also put our organization in jeopardy of maintaining our charitable status.

Why do we not accept donations for projects outside of the budget?
Because we are supporting a foreign organization (NPH), the IRS has very specific regulations. These regulations require that Friends of the Orphans clearly state what we are supporting at NPH. In order to support the greatest needs of NPH, the Friends of the Orphans National Board has passed a resolution to support the NPH budget. The NPH budget is determined by the NPH National Directors and NPH International. The National Board can also pass additional resolutions to support specific projects, if deemed appropriate. If a donor designates outside of what has been approved by the National board, the donation is not tax deductible according to the IRS regulations AND could also put our organization in jeopardy of maintaining our charitable status.

How do we know if a project is in the budget or not? How do we help a potential donor give toward a “project” of interest to them?
Work with your Regional Director to determine how we can best match your interests with the needed items in the budget of NPH.

How much money does Friends give to NPH?
Friends does much more than just give money to NPH. For example, we fund all costs in the U.S. for the international volunteer program and in-kind donation program so that NPH does not have to spend money in these areas. Additionally, we spend money to send pequeños to school here in the U.S. and fund the entire communication process between pequeños and their U.S. sponsors, so there is much more to the story than “How much money does Friends give to NPH” that should be considered. The direct answer to the question, however, is that in 2011 Friends provided $5.8 million of cash and another $5.6 million of in-kind donations (independently valued and primarily medicine and medical supplies) directly to NPH. In 2012, we are anticipating increasing that amount by $ .5M without adding an additional dollar of overhead.

What percentage of money raised by Friends goes to NPH?
Friends strives to keep general and administrative expenses as low as possible. Over the last three years, 87% of our resources were spent on programs, and 13% on administration and fundraising. This includes money, medicine and in-kind gifts that were provided to NPH directly as well as expenses for activities which are of direct benefit to NPH and the children (child sponsorship, volunteer program, in-kind giving program, etc.). This percentage compares well to other non-profit organizations and is subject to an external audit every year.
