SUMMARY:NPH Nicaragua
DESCRIPTION:October 23 - 30, 2012Whether you are new to Friends of the Orphans or a longtime supporter or sponsor, visiting a home is the best way to see what we do in action. You will meet the amazing children, staff and volunteers of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”) and learn about their daily lives. Travelers of all ages are welcome, including children.* Join us – your life may never be the same! *In compliance with NPH’s international volunteer policy, all visitors under the age of 21 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. NPH Nicaragua In May 1994, NPH Nicaragua became the fourth NPH home in Central America. With the arrival of the first four children, a small house was rented in the town of Granada. More children arrived each week, and they slowly outgrew their small rented home. New property was acquired on Ometepe Island, across Lake Nicaragua. Casa Santiago on the Island of Ometepe, was soon christened, and the children of NPH moved into the new property. In 2005, the need arose to relocate our NPH family from the island to the mainland due to volcanic activity. The new home, called Casa Padre Wasson, is situated near the town of Jinotepe, one hour outside of the capital, Managua. In the last months of 2010, with 12 houses built, a dining hall and elementary school complete, the NPH Nicaragua family left Ometepe Island and moved into Casa Padre Wasson. High School and university student continue to live in student homes in Managua. Trip Highlights We will have the unique opportunity to stay at the NPH home with the children, in a newly constructed visitor’s house. This will allow us to immerse ourselves in NPH life with the children. While the children are in school, you will help out around the home (assisting with daily chores around the property, working in the gardens and farm, caring for the babies, working in the kitchen, and viewing the school, etc.). Relax or hang out with the pequeños in the afternoons. In the evenings, you will join the children for their evening meal, help them with their homework, and play games. We will coordinate group activities with the different age groups throughout the week. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to meet with the leadership of NPH Nicaragua, tour all of the home’s facilities including vocational workshops, and hear “talks” from some of the children. We will also spend an evening sharing dinner with the High school/university Students in Managua. We will also plan an excursion day to one of the local attractions, which will include the opportunity to shop for some souvenirs. Cost: $500 per person Price includes: • Accommodations at Casa Padre Wasson • Local transportation • Donation to NPH Nicaragua through Friends of the Orphans • Meals while at NPH • Meal with international volunteers • Meal with high school/university students • Friends of the Orphans interpreter and guide Price does not include: • Airfare • Outside meals • Outside attractions costs Payment Schedule • $200 non-refundable depost due September 15, 2012 • Remainder due October 1, 2012 The full amount (less deposit) is refundable, until two weeks before the trip (October 9).
